One thing for sure in some ways they didn't die in vain. The images shocked Republicans as well.

The Priest who gave them last rites was involved in the peace process.

Crazy times. I remember in 97 I was working in Dublin. I had nothing as such to fear from the IRA but the opposite as Loyalist killing were increasing and they had said they would target foreign businessmen in Dublin.

The British government has also a lot to answer for as to why 2 soldiers dressed as undercover where they especially after a hands off approach had been given for both funerals.

Got lost? right. Is anyone buying that? It's almost as if they were setup.

Herford, Hereford coincidence?

I have to say that the documentary last night was quite a well put together documentary about the IRA. Probably the closest we will ever get to some of the "ring leaders". But there were times when I was quite exasperated to be honest.

So three IRA terrorists get killed in Gibraltar, many would argue they got there come uppance, the IRA maintain it was an execution as they didn't have guns on them. No they didn't, but they had a stash of explosives in a car in readiness for a military parade three days later!!!

The families of the three so called "victims" spoke of them as though they were absolute heroes. They were terrorists!!! End of story. If they hadn't been killed, they would have killed. Where is the difference?

But what of the two soldiers who were in the car at the scene of the second funeral? What on earth were they doing there? Long hair, moustaches, and in a "no go zone". Some high up individuals of the IRA say they have slight remorse for the way the two soldiers were treated. That wasn't remorse, that was revenge. A big cover up as well. Those two guys were there for a reason.

If the IRA were a fraction as professional and efficient as Al Quaeda or ISIS, Germany in the late 80's early 90's would have been far, far worse. But at the time, it was frightening enough.

You see..whatever your cause..and no matter how just..doing what the IRA did to Howes and Wood was way beyond warfare..soldiers don't treat their foe in that manner

It wasnt a result..it was cowardly and pathetic..and showed the world what the IRA where all about.

Re: The Corporals Killings - 30 years ago today
On vehicle checkpoints you were briefed on the local players..and..fair play to em..they knew how to wind you up..

They were no mugs..but some of shit they pulled was way below the belt..they will claim all's fair..they were the guerrillas. .and all that.

It was nasty..both sides

pretty mental looking back..convicts had better living conditions than us let me tell you..and that was at HQ..out in the field..shit order

Re: The Corporals Killings - 30 years ago today
The IRA and their cohorts were highly paranoid and on edge at this time.

Gibraltar. .Stone..and this..all in a short space of time and a lot it linked.

In a strange way...I think it sobered up all that pulled the strings..and was the beginning of what you have now..relative peace in NI

As for Gibraltar. ..I remember the 'RA crying about the cold blooded slotting of their comrades. ..no they went given any chance..they were aiming to butcher the Musicians of my Regiment..bloody good ones an all..

Re: The Corporals Killings - 30 years ago today
Sold is correct.

They were brutally beaten and died a shit death..and retribution was taken.

No ordinary squaddie was ever armed with personal weapons in plain clothes..only spooks ..head sheds or the chaps..

They were on a job..and they fucked up..and paid a very heavy price

Was in London at college at the time. Clearly remember how impressed I was that there was no trace of an anti-Irish nationalist backlash in the media. Saw it as a sign of the maturity and political solid-grounding of English politics and society.

I've never seen those videos they showed on Panorama before of the car pulling up and they dumping the bodies. The dropping of the bodies over the fence when they were still alive was the horrible. What a dirty conflict that was, no one comes out of it well, some evil psychopaths on all sides so much collusion that had dire consequences for all sides.

When you look back at the history of London Bombings it makes ISIS look like amateurs. I don't recall being worried and no one was living in fear

I was coming backing from the Commercial road to Canning Town with my mate in a taxi when it felt the car had been shunted in the in the back When we got back to our local we found out it was the iRA and Docklands bombing Always remember the date because it was my birthday Feb 9, 1996
